European Champions Commit to Dubai Desert Classic

Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland, and Shane Lowry headline a star-studded field for January's Hero Dubai Desert Classic, reuniting the heroes of Bethpage Black.

The heroes of Bethpage Black are heading back to the desert.

Organizers of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic confirmed on Wednesday that European Ryder Cup stars Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland, and Shane Lowry have all committed to the field for the January 2026 event.

A Victory Lap?

For the European contingent, the early season swing in the Middle East will likely feel like a continuation of their victory celebrations. It will be the first time many of the team members have competed in the same field since their 15-13 triumph over the United States in September.

McIlroy, a multiple-time winner of the event, will be looking to start his 2026 campaign with silverware, while Hovland will be eager to prove his fitness following the neck injury that forced his withdrawal from the Sunday singles at the Ryder Cup.

Lowry's Return

Shane Lowry, confirming his return to Emirates Golf Club for the first time since 2023, expressed his excitement about kicking off the new season with his teammates.

"There were some incredible moments in 2025, particularly at Bethpage Black, and now I'm looking forward to getting 2026 off to a positive start by returning to Dubai for the Hero Dubai Desert Classic," Lowry said in a statement released by the tournament. "I've played this tournament many times over the years, and I always love being back at Emirates Golf Club."

Lowry also recently reflected on his decisive six-foot putt on the final day at Bethpage, describing the moment as "the coolest thing I've done in my life" and admitting it's a memory that still frequently occupies his thoughts.

The tournament is a Rolex Series event and promises to draw one of the strongest fields on the DP World Tour.
