BMW PGA Championship 2026: Irish Open and Ryder Cup Points Watch

The BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, September 17-20, is the next major checkpoint in Europe’s early 2027 Ryder Cup qualifying race. It follows the completed Irish Open at Doonbeg, where Shane Lowry won by a record 11 strokes on September 13. This preview was updated on September 14 with the result; Wentworth has not started. Both tournaments count toward Europe’s qualification process, but their points values differ. The DP World Tour’s official Back 9 guide lists 1,500 Ryder Cup points for the Irish Open and 2,000 for the BMW PGA Championship, a Rolex Series event. Those are event pools, not the winner’s individual reward.

The September schedule

• Irish Open (completed): September 10-13, 2026; Trump International Golf Links, Doonbeg; 1,500-point European Ryder Cup pool.
• BMW PGA Championship: September 17-20, 2026; Wentworth Club; 2,000-point European Ryder Cup pool.
• Open de France: September 24-27, 2026; Le Golf National; the next regular Back 9 event, also with a 1,500-point pool.

The Irish Open’s competitive rounds ran Thursday to Sunday. Practice-day or event-week dates should not be confused with the four rounds used to decide the tournament.

These events are part of a qualification process already underway. They are not exhibitions staged to select a team, and an individual leaderboard is not itself a Ryder Cup standings table. The final result has to be processed under the qualification rules before a new official points order can be reported.

Why Wentworth carries extra weight

The BMW PGA Championship offers a larger European Ryder Cup pool than a regular Back 9 event. The arithmetic is straightforward: 2,000 is one-third more than 1,500. It is therefore a potentially important week for eligible players near one another in the early standings.

That comparison is about the event pool. It does not mean a player receives 2,000 points for winning or that every individual award must be exactly one-third higher regardless of the distribution rules. The official table should be used for player allocations.

It is also essential to distinguish Ryder Cup points from Race to Dubai points. The same tournament can contribute to both competitions using different scales. A result report quoting a Race to Dubai award cannot simply be copied into a Ryder Cup tracker.

The European players confirmed for Wentworth

The DP World Tour’s field announcement includes captain Luke Donald and Viktor Hovland, alongside Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, Ludvig Åberg, Sepp Straka, Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Rose, Tyrrell Hatton and other established names. Alex Noren is the defending champion.

The field also includes players who are not eligible for Europe. Ryan Fox and Billy Horschel, for example, can affect the tournament leaderboard without becoming European Ryder Cup candidates. A Ryder Cup reading of the result must therefore consider nationality and the applicable membership requirements, not just finishing position.

Announced participation is the basis of this preview, not a guarantee against a later withdrawal. The tour’s final entry list and starting times remain the appropriate sources for who actually tees off.

What to watch beyond the winner

Our editorial focus is on three questions. First, can a player assemble four competitive rounds? A single low score can attract attention, but a sustained week gives more context for judging whether a player’s game is holding together under changing conditions.

Second, how does a player respond when the tournament becomes difficult? A recovery after dropped shots and a controlled closing stretch can be useful evidence for team selection discussions. Such observations should be tied to the actual round, rather than inferred from a final finishing position alone.

Third, what role might that player fill in a team? A productive four-ball partner and a dependable foursomes partner need not have identical strengths. Stroke-play success can start that discussion, but it cannot demonstrate a partnership that has never been tested.

Why the early standings can look unfamiliar

The official list displayed a September 11 update date when checked on September 14, with Joe Dean first, Nacho Elvira second and Harry Hall third. That snapshot excludes the completed Irish Open; a post-event update has not yet been verified. That is a snapshot after the opening qualifying events, not a prediction that Europe’s most familiar Ryder Cup players have lost their places.

A standings table at this stage reflects a short counting window. Players who have competed successfully in those events have points; reputation accumulated before the window is not a substitute. The right response is to follow how the list develops, rather than replace unfamiliar leaders with an editorial selection of stars.

Does the BMW PGA count toward U.S. Ryder Cup qualification?

No U.S. points are awarded from these September 2026 tournaments. The new American selection criteria begin qualifying in January 2027. Do not confuse Wentworth’s BMW PGA Championship with the PGA TOUR’s BMW Championship, which closes the American points race in August 2027.

Lowry’s Irish Open victory is confirmed. The next useful update is a newly dated official European points list that includes that result, followed by the completed Wentworth tournament. We have not assigned Lowry an unverified points total or automatic qualifying position.
