Forrest won in Madrid at 14 under, one stroke ahead of Eugenio Chacarra and Victor Perez, earning invitations to the 2027 Masters and Open Championship.

Grant Forrest won the 2026 Open de España on October 11, birdieing the final hole to finish one stroke ahead of Eugenio Chacarra and Victor Perez. The Scot closed with 70 at Real Club de Campo Villa de Madrid for a 14-under total and his third DP World Tour title.

The victory also brought invitations to the 2027 Masters and The Open at St Andrews. The DP World Tour's tournament report describes the winning finish and those two opportunities. Sky Sports' account records the one-stroke margin, closing 70 and final-hole birdie.

The final hole decided the title

Forrest reached the last tied with Chacarra and Perez on 13 under. His birdie moved him clear, ending the prospect of a three-way playoff. EFE's Madrid report places the three players level entering the decisive hole and records Forrest's winning total of 14 under.

The finish was the last swing in an unsettled Sunday rather than the conclusion of an uninterrupted procession. Forrest had to recover from dropped shots while others moved into contention. The tournament organiser's account describes four bogeys during his final round and his ability to stay in the contest until the closing hole.

The shared lead made the final approach and short game decisive. The eventual winner needed one more birdie, rather than another full round of dominance, to separate himself from two opponents with the same tournament score.

A victory with opportunities beyond Madrid

The Masters and Open invitations give this result consequences beyond the trophy. Forrest can plan for two major championship appearances in 2027, an opportunity he did not possess simply by arriving in Spain.

His earlier DP World Tour victories came at the 2021 Hero Open and the 2025 Nexo Championship. The tour's report identifies Madrid as his first victory on the circuit outside Scotland. That makes this a new step in his career without requiring a prediction about how he will perform in the majors.

Tournament invitations and Ryder Cup places are awarded through different routes. Winning in Madrid opens those two specific major doors. It does not automatically place Forrest in Luke Donald's team at Adare Manor.

What does the win add to Europe's Ryder Cup discussion?

The result gives Donald another performance to consider during the qualifying season. Forrest handled a closing hole with the championship still undecided, executing a chip and a putt to win the title.

There are limits to the comparison. A stroke-play win does not establish who would make his best foursomes partner, how he would perform in a singles match or whether this form will continue into the selection period's closing weeks. Those questions need further tournament evidence.

Further strong finishes would help Forrest sustain his case as the qualifying season progresses.

Where this fits in the qualifying season

Europe's qualifying window is already open, while the American points race begins in January 2027. The qualification tracker explains those different calendars.

The September 27 European points snapshot predates Madrid. For selection analysis following the Spanish Open, see the 2027 team watch.
